Mysuru crime rate sees a dip of 7 percent in 2018

Police recover Rs.4.10 crore worth valuables, properties; Rs.8.26 crore penalty collected from traffic rules violators; 265 raids conducted against illegal activities

Mysuru: Mysuru city has seen a decline of 7% in crime last year (2018) compared to 2017. Thanks to various initiatives implemented by City Police last year resulting in the decline of crime related activities.

In 2018, the Mysuru City Police had implemented New Beat System, Night Beat System, deployment of vehicles such as Garuda, Cobra, Cheetah, Interceptors and Women Helpline vehicles for 24 hours beat, conducting Operation Sunset, Operation Shubhodaya, opening of Modus Operandi Bureau (MOB) Cards (MOB card  contains records of arrested and convicted accused. The records are classified on the basis of modus operandi of criminals), keeping vigil on activities of those in MOB resulting in solving 339 robbery cases and recovery of valuables and properties worth Rs.4.10 crore.

Keeping a hawk eye on rowdy elements, the Anti-Rowdy Squad conducted Rowdy Parades, registered cases on them besides putting brakes on all illegal activities resulting in the control of rowdy activities in city.

The Police have registered a total of 769 cases against anti-social elements in 2018. The Police have also conducted a total of 265 raids on various illegal activities besides registering cases. A total of 9,284 cases under Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) besides collecting Rs.9,55,650 penalty.

The Mysuru City Traffic Police, which conducted various operations and drives against traffic rules offenders, have collected a total of Rs.8.26 crore penalty from the violators.

Special initiatives introduced in 2018

Distribution of visiting cards: The Mysuru City Beat Police distributed visiting cards to the residents coming under various Beat Police jurisdictions in city. The visiting cards contain the name of the Beat Police, designation, mobile number, photograph of the Beat Police, Beat number and other details printed in Kannada and English to help the residents inform the concerned Beat Police about the problem being faced by them.

Rowdy Parades: The Police are conducting rowdy parades once in three months to                            prevent crimes and maintain law and order in city.

Crime Prevention Month: In a bid to prevent crimes, Crime Prevention Month was held in December 2018 during which awareness was created among the public through various events.

Operation Eagle: The Police conducted surprise raids on houses of rowdy-sheeters and checked their activities to know whether they are indulging in illegal activities.

Operation Hawk: To tighten grip on rowdy-sheeters and those anti-social elements who take shelter at city lodges, surprise inspections were conducted at hotels and lodges across the city.

Operation Hound: To take action against those indulging in consuming liquor on roads, parks, grounds and creating nuisance.

Operation Chamundi: To control illegal activities, wheelie by two-wheeler riders and crime related activities at Chamundi Hill.

Operation Decoy: A drive against erring auto drivers demanding excess fare from passengers, catching chain-snatchers and extortionists by posing as civilians.

Operation Owl: A drive to prevent crimes during night by conducting night beat and questioning those moving around after midnight and clicking photos of those found moving around in suspicious manner.

Commando Team (Panthers): A Commando team formed to prevent any untoward incidents in city.

Mobile Command Control Vehicle: The state-of-the-art Mobile Command Centre for surveillance especially during bigger events like Dasara and VVIP visits. Equivalent to a thousand eyes within a large area, the hi-tech vehicle, which has all the features of a Police Control Room, will be on the move to capture all the action live at all the places where it is stationed.

Operation Deport: Tracing of foreigners who are staying illegally in city and taking action by deporting them and conducting programmes for owners and organisations where foreign students are studying and staying, to keep them informed about their responsibilities.

Traffic Advisory Committee: In order to improve traffic management in city, Traffic Adalat was held to hear grievances and take suggestions from public.

Operation Cheetah: A drive to implement Traffic rules.

Operation Friendly Enforcement: A drive to encourage motorists to follow traffic rules compulsorily by speaking in a friendly manner to traffic rules offenders and giving them Traffic Advisory Slips without imposing fine.

Operation Swan: To make Traffic Police more people-friendly by conducting workshops on Yoga, walkathon to Chamundi Hill and organising lectures to increase their professionalism for effective control of traffic.

Awareness through Little Hearts: Bringing school children to the renovated Traffic Children’s Park opposite Police Commissioner’s office and creating awareness on traffic rules.

MYTRA: An initiative to make Traffic Police People-friendly.

National Road Safety Week: A special prog. conducted in the month of January for the public to create awareness on   traffic rules.

Welfare programmes for Police Officers and staff

The Police Department, in a bid to encourage education among the children of Police personnel, distributed cash prizes to the students who obtained high marks in SSLC and PUC exams and laptop to those who scored maximum marks.

Functioning of Sports Complex at the foot of Chamundi Hill to encourage sporting activities among Cops, construction of a guest house, renovation of Police Canteen, starting medical store, grocery store, HOPCOMS, Chats Centre, ATM, drinking water units at the Police Canteen where the goods are sold at discount rates and construction of an Amphitheatre, where movies will be screened for the family members of Police personnel during weekends.

Road accidents in 2018

Total Accident Cases-831. Fatal- 147, Non-Fatal-684, Deaths-158 and Injured- 879.

Reasons of deaths

Total-158. Without Helmet- 55, Drunk-and-Drive- 4, Self Accidents – 19, Rash and Negligent/Overspeeding – 67 and Others – 13.   

City Police Commissioner Dr. A. Subramanyeswara Rao has stated that all the above operations and drives would continue this year (2019) too along with other unique projects to maintain law and order and to control crime related activities in city, according to a press release from the PRO, City Police Commissioner’s Office, Mysuru.
