Statue impasse at Gun House Circle: Pramoda Devi Wadiyar writes to Suttur Seer to reconsider decision

July 20, 2022

Mysore/Mysuru: Member of erstwhile Mysore royal family and wife of late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar has written to Suttur Mutt Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji urging him to reconsider his plans to install the statue of late Suttur Seer Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swamiji at the Gun House Circle near the Palace.

The letter, written on July 15, 2022, appealed to the Seer to facilitate the erection of Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar’s statue at the spot — near the South Gate of the Mysore Palace. The Gun House Circle is situated in front of JSS Mahavidyapeetha building as well as near the South Gate of the Mysore Palace.

It may be mentioned here that the statue issue has been a bone of contention between different organisations and groups. While one group is advocating the installation of Sri Rajendra Swamiji’s statue, the other is demanding Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar’s statue there.

Citing the presence of the statue of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar at K.R. Circle, Chamaraja Wadiyar’s statue at North Gate of the Palace and Jayachamaraja Wadiyar’s statue at Hardinge Circle, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar has said that all the Circles surrounding the Palace featured the statues of the late Maharajas and the statue of Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar at the Gun House Circle would be ideal and proper.

Another view of the Gun House Circle.

She urged the Suttur Seer to kindly reconsider his plan to install the statue of late Suttur Seer Sri Rajendra Swamiji in view of the public desire that is in favour of Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar’s statue at the designated place.

Several people had submitted requisitions to her to take steps to install her late husband’s statue at Gun House Circle. “I would wholeheartedly welcome the magnanimity shown by you to reconsider the installation of the statue,” Pramoda Devi Wadiyar wrote to Suttur Swamiji.

Meanwhile, the Mysore Palace sources said that they had received an acknowledgement of the delivery of the letter on July 18 but a reply from the Suttur Mutt is awaited.

Wadiyars have donated as charity most of the properties in Mysore to JSS=suttur mutt starting from Hasuvian Karoti (current JSS as in the 2nd picture), Aane Karoti, JCE land (old mysore race course) and list goes on …. who is this man to give permission !! cant understand.

This is one of the most dangerous circles in Mysore. There are five entry and exit points, and they are not 90 degrees from each other. To make the matter worst people take a U-turn bypassing the circle at least at one point. I hope, the new statue they are going to install will not pose more problems to motorists.

This Lingayat Seer , a political manipulator, not a Kaavi-clad swami will win, as he will appeal to Narendrsa Modi and Lingayat CM Bommaii. He is richer than any one in Karnataka, as he gets a slice of income from all farmers and all landlords in villages across Karnataka for his medical colleges, universities etc.. where rich students can buy seats and become doctors or whatever.
Master Hirannaiaih said in 1960s in his drama ‘Lanchavatar’ about the power of @Khadi, Kaavi, Khaki’, this Kaavi beats them all. dreadful state the country is mired into with the likes of these Kaavi-clad villains fixing CMs and politics.
As for SD Wadiyar, he was, shall we say indulged in excesses-women and drinks. The stories of him getting entangled with both the wife and sister-in-law of the owner of a well known hotel in Vani Vilas area-known for its dosas, were talked about for a long time. Like father , like son!

I thought sometime back, Karnataka High Court categorically junked the project as per an earlier SC directive to prohibit statues etc in public roads. How is this being revived again?

Honestly speaking neither of them deserve a statue near the Palace. Mysore city and the fort and many temples within and outside & Kannada culture was revived by Maharaja Shri Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. It is a matter of shame there is no statue of him in public place in Mysore or elsewhere except an apology within Maharaja High School premises.
Hope saner thoughts and intent will dawn on the authorities and the dowager and do the needful
