Man sentenced to death for killing mother, pregnant wife, two children

December 2, 2024

Mysuru: City’s 5th Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a man to death for killing his wife, two children and his mother.

The man, who was sentenced to death is Manikantaswamy, a resident of Chamegowdanahalli in Saragur taluk.

Manikantaswamy had married Ganga, daughter of Devamma of Hegganuru village eight years ago and the couple have four-year-old son Samrat and 18-month-old son Rohit. Ganga was nine months pregnant when she was murdered.

Manikantaswamy, who is physically challenged, was working as a tailor. His brother, Ramesh, used to come to his house quiet often and speak with Ganga resulting in Manikantaswamy doubting his wife and quarrel with Ganga. Fed up with his abuses, Ganga began to stay in her mother’s house and the village elders, after convincing Ganga, had brought her back to Manikantaswamy’s house and had left her there.

On Apr. 26, 2021, when Ganga’s relatives had come to take her for delivery, he had quarrelled with them. On Apr. 28, Manikantaswamy, stating that the two children were not born to him, picked up a fight and when his mother Kempajamma intervened and tried to stop the fight, he began to quarrel                                                          with her.

On the same night, when everyone was fast asleep, Manikantaswamy, who picked up his iron walking stick, hit the heads of Ganga, his mother Kempajamma and smashed the head and face of his son Samrat, killing them and strangled Rohit, killing all of them and he had fled from the spot.

Based on the complaint from Ganga’s relatives, Saragur Police had registered a case.

H.D. Kote Circle Inspector N. Anand, who conducted an investigation, had submitted a charge-sheet to the Court.

Judge Gururaj Somakkalavar, who took up the case, heard the arguments from both sides, found Manikantaswamy guilty of committing the crimes and sentenced him to death besides imposing a fine of Rs. 10,000.

B.E. Yogeshwar argued on behalf of the Government.
