Ignored for years, Dr. C.P. Krishnakumar speaks out on Dasara guest selection

Mysore/Mysuru: A video of renowned Kannada writer Dr. C.P. Krishnakumar (CPK) expressing his disappointment over the Karnataka Government’s choice of chief guest for this year’s Dasara inauguration has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread debate.

In the video, the veteran littérateur questions why his name was repeatedly overlooked despite his decades-long contributions to Kannada literature and culture.

This year, the Government has invited International Booker Prize-winning author Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate the Nada Habba.

 “Leave aside her religion — Banu Mushtaq’s achievements are commendable. But I am also qualified to inaugurate Dasara. The Government has ignored me not just this year, but for many years now,” CPK said.

He stressed that seniority and literary merit should have been given due weightage in the selection process.  “Several eminent personalities had recommended my name. Even Kuvempu would often say, ‘Why should I be arrogant about anything?’ This is not about Banu Mushtaq’s faith. It’s about recognising contributions and upholding cultural values,” he remarked.

CPK also recalled his association with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, adding that the Government could have considered him for the honour. “If religion becomes a deciding factor, it becomes an obstacle. That is not what Dasara stands for,” he cautioned.

The video has stirred conversations in literary and civic circles, with many echoing CPK’s sentiments and calling for a more inclusive, merit-based approach to selecting individuals for such prestigious cultural honours.
