Mysuru: A grand procession, jointly organised by Vishwamaitri Buddha Vihara and Mahabodhi Maitri Mandala, marked the 2561st Buddha Jayanti celebrations in city this morning.
Former Mayor Purushotham flagged off the procession from Mahabodhi School in Saraswathipuram.
Speaking on the occasion, Purushotham explained the significance of Buddha Jayanti.
Pointing out that Buddha was the first ever humanist, who advocated the importance of freedom, equality and social justice, he said that Buddha was also the biggest votary of peace.
He stressed on the need for popularising Buddha’s thoughts and preachings among all sections of the society.
The procession, in which hundreds of school children, members of the public and Buddhist monks took part, passed through Saraswathipuram, Fire Brigade, Ramaswamy Circle, Basaveshwara circle, Agrahara Circle, Vani Vilasa Road and RTO Circle, before reaching Buddha Vihara near Ashoka Circle (Ballal Circle), where the stage programme will take place later in the evening.
The participants held placards that carried various messages of Buddha. The procession, which was accompanied by a music band and Mangalavadya also featured carrying of Buddha statue in a chariot.
Deputy Mayor Rathna Lakshman, Singer Lakshmiram, Mahabodhi Society’s Puttaswamy and others were present.
