Hinkal Flyover junction to be named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee

November 19, 2018

Mysuru: Although the works on Hinkal Flyover is almost complete, it seems that its inauguration may be delayed further and this time the gala event will depend on the availability of VVIPs both from the State and the Centre.

While local authorities including District Minister G.T. Devegowda want Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to open the flyover on Nov.28, Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha wants Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri to inaugurate it and he is available only on Dec.7.

Once inaugurated, the Hinkal Flyover junction will be named after former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, said Pratap Simha. He said that already the junction has Vajpayee’s name and an attractive sign board will be erected at the junction in the former PM’s name.

The Hinkal Flyover, the first flyover in the city, is waiting for inauguration as all the major works have been completed. It was scheduled to be inaugurated before Dasara but was postponed as some of the minor works had to be completed. Again, the announcement of by-polls schedule for the three Lok Sabha and two Assembly constituencies in the State came in the way of inauguration.

The Flyover has been constructed by Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) at a cost of Rs. 21.5 crore (original project cost Rs. 13.5 crore) with the works on the project commencing on June 22, 2016. The 4-lane Flyover is 510 meters long and 17.20 meters wide, with 1.20 meter central median. The project has been executed under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) scheme, with the Centre funding 60 percent, the State Government and MUDA 20% each.

As the project’s major funding is from the Centre, Pratap Simha, who inspected the Flyover this morning, wants Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to inaugurate, sources said. A tentative date of Nov. 28 was fixed by Minister G.T. Devegowda for CM Kumaraswamy to inaugurate. However, the Minister has now been informed about MP’s views and the inauguration date has been fixed for Dec. 7.

The date will be finalised in consultation with the CM and the announcement is expected to be made at the MUDA Board meeting on Nov. 24. Also, a MUDA Adalat has been organised on Nov. 29 where State Urban Development Minister U.T. Khader will hear public grievances. The same day, he will hold a meeting of officials from MCC, MUDA and Slum Board at Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

Why not compromise? Let both CM and the union minster jointly inaugurate the fly over. I think MUDA and State can take some pride in the fact that the fly over was completed under 3 years. Usually, projects like these have a habit of dragging on for years. I can’t help remembering it took more than 20 years for Kempe Gowda International Airport to come to fruition!

  2. Common Man says:

Let us name the flyover junction with a name from our hero’s from Karnataka state.

    Is’nt is a good idea.

    • swamy says:

Already lot of heroes names have been used. Show me one genuine hero from Karnataka who has not been named. Wodeyar, Viswewariah, Rajkumar, Deveraj Urs, Kuvempu, and host of others..

  4. Moon Prasad Ambrati says:

My suggestion and demand is to name the fly over in the name of the our real heroes of Indian defense force. We are having lots of heroes from Mysore district.. please make a note at least we can give a respect to them for their great scarification for us..

  5. Prakash R says:

There is no special relationship between Vajpayee and Mysore. Just because Simha is a BJP MP, he wants to name it after Vajpayee. With due to respect to our former PM, I would like to say that Mysoreans or Karnataka people should have self esteem to name important places or structures after our own people from Karnataka itself. That way we tell the entire nation that our state too has so many achievers. In fact, there are so many outsiders names in Mysore also like Vivekananda, Ramakrishna (both Bengali), Radhakrishnan, CV Raman (both Tamil), Gandhi, Patel, Tilak (north), Shivani, Sayyaji (Marati)… the list goes on and on…

    • Rao says:

Our M.P is known for licking BJP top brass whenever there is an opportunity.
He chants Modi all the time, wouldn’t be surprised if his first choice was Modi then followed by Vajpayee.
Why the hell is he adamant to postpone the inauguration just to facilitate some Central minister.
Was this not the same guy who promised and got attention in media by telling this flyover will be operational by Dasara?

  6. Raghu says:

A lot of Congress A$$ lickers seem to be upset at naming this flyover after Vajpayee! Fair enough! They have their fundamental right given by their leaders to call anybody a bhakth! Just to remind you, this atrocity did not start today
the last 18 years, on a rough estimate, about 450 Central and State Government programmes, projects and national and State-level institutions involving public expenditure of hundreds of thousands of crores of rupees have been named after these three individuals.

You make a good point. However, please make your point without using expletives!

Actual Behati Vajpye was an honest politician, and PM. Nobody can question his integrity. Irrespective of ones party affiliations, there should not be any objections to naming the fly over after Vajpye, a true Indian patriot. More over, I believe the Hinkal Junction was already being referred to as Vajpye Junction.

    • Hegde says:

      self certification at its best.
Do u know how any present politician would be judged after 30+ years?
