International Day of Persons with Disabilities: AIISH to honour parents and caregivers on Dec. 5

Mysore/Mysuru: The International Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to promote awareness regarding disability issues and the fundamental rights of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development.

The All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysuru, is commemorating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities -2023 with the theme “United in Action to Rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by Persons with Disabilities” on Dec. 5 at 10.30 am at the Institute premises in city.

V.S. Basavaraju, Deputy Director, Department of Women and Child Development, Bengaluru, will be the chief guest. K.V. Jyothi, District Disabled Welfare Officer, Mysuru, will be the guest of honour. Prof. M. Pushpavathi, Director, AIISH, will preside. 

On this occasion parents/caregivers/clients and other activists who have significantly contributed either at an individual level to bring an altruistic change in the lives of persons with disabilities will be felicitated.

R. Avinash, aged 36 years, was diagnosed as Hearing Impairment. After attending intensive speech-language therapy, listening training and special education services at AIISH, now he is able to communicate well and excel in sports. He is working as a Computer Lab Instructor at Channa Basaveshwara Institute of Technology, Tumkur since 15 years. He is also involved in creating awareness about hearing impairment in the workplace & society.

Purna Prajna, aged 28 years was diagnosed having Hearing Impairment at the age of 2.5 years at AIISH in the year 1999. Early rehabilitation, intensive home training and holistic approach have enabled him to communicate well and showcase his talent in extra-curricular activities. Currently working as trainee at Rossell Techsys Company, Bengaluru. He is involved in training and supporting development team with content creation and using tools such as Adobe and PowerPoint presentation.

Prasad Babu, aged 47, was diagnosed as having Aphasia with Right Hemiparesis. Intensive Speech-Language Therapy and Physiotherapy has enabled him to communicate and reduce dependency in day to day life. Currently he is equipped with skills to go back to his work place.

H.P. Srinidhi, aged 39, was diagnosed as having Intellectual Disability at the age of 12 years at AIISH during 1997. Intensive Speech-Language Therapy and Vocational Training has enabled him to lead an independent livelihood. He has also showcased his talent in extra-curricular activities. Since 2009 he is working at AJS Company, a small scale factory for the preparation of paper files.

Chethan Murthy, aged 19 years, was diagnosed as having Hearing Impairment. Early rehabilitation, Intensive Speech-Language Therapy and listening training has enabled him to showcase his talent in academics and extra-curricular activities.  Currently working as trainee at Rossell Techsys Company, Bengaluru, he is involved in training and supporting development team with content creation using tools and Adobe PowerPoint presentation.

On this occasion, the Institute will also honour “AIISH Mother of the Year” to parents/ caregivers of persons with disabilities who have worked with extraordinary efforts, dedication, sincerity and hard work leading to a significant change in the child’s life with improvement in all domains.

Nagrathnamma, grand-mother of D.M. Srihan, diagnosed with Spoken Language Disorder secondary to near normal intelligence, who availed Speech-Language and Occupational Therapy services at AIISH since 2022.

K. Puttaswamy, father of Samruddi, diagnosed with Multiple Disabilities,  availed Speech-Language, Physiotherapy and Pre-school services at AIISH since 2021.

M.V. Ummukulsum, mother of Master Roshan Mohammed, diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder availed Speech-Language, Occupational and Behavioral Therapy services at AIISH since 2019.         

Sunandamma,  mother of  P. Pavan, diagnosed with Global Developmental delay availed Speech-Language and Physiotherapy services at AIISH since 2023.

Rajani, mother of Trupthi, diagnosed with Hearing Impairment who have availed Listening and Speech-Language Therapy services at AIISH since 2020.
