Mysuru: ‘Modi’ script, which has a unique feature where a writer without lifting the pen writes it, has a history of its own and this should be preserved and developed, said Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep.

He was speaking after inaugurating a three-day workshop on ‘Modi Lipi,’ organised by the Karnataka State Archives Department at its premises here on Thursday and said that this ‘Modi’ script is also said to be written in Marathi, Urdu, Hindi and Kannada. “To write using this script itself is an art and it is befitting that a workshop has been organised for the researchers, which is a healthy development,” said Randeep.

There are a lot of documents pertaining to this available in the State. Among this, one written by Dewan Poornaiah is also there. In the light of his writings, the information on the history and the lifestyle of the people of those days can be found, he said.

State Archives, Mysuru Division, Deputy Director Dr. J.V. Gayathri speaking said, the study of ‘Modi’ script is a very complex task. A lot of research has been done earlier on this subject. However, of late, the study and research has come down and hence there should be more emphasis on it, she added.

The ‘Modi’ script was in usage during the Mysuru rulers’ time and many of the information related to the then administration, Palace construction and several other nuggets could be gleaned. Through this script including Biligirirangana Hill, the  importance of other places of interest is available.

Earlier, Dr. Sangamesha Kayani’s work on the ‘Modi’ script titled ‘Modi Kalike Kalyani,’ brought out by the State Archives Department, was released on the occasion.

The Department’s Dy. Director Dr. S. Ambujakshi, Mysuru Division Archives Officer  Dr. Gavisiddaiah and others were present.
