Mysuru: “Research is not just finding something new but also utilising earlier research findings to find solutions to day-to-day problems,” opined Dr. P.R. Naga Srinivasa, Retired Additional General Manager, BHEL.

He was speaking  at a lecture session on ‘How to Innovate’ as part of the monthly Science lecture series organised by Mysore Science Foundation (MSF) at Maneyangala in Kalamandira premises here recently.

Defining the variants of research, Dr. Naga Srinivasa, showing a box of pencils, said that the cross-section of a simple pencil was changed from triangle to hexagon to get an easy and firmer grip and added that a small eraser was attached to the pencil later to do away with a separate eraser.

He observed that such innovations should follow any research. He pointed out similar changes in TVs, radios, computers and many more items years ago and now.

Regretting that education had become monotonous with no room for thinking, Dr. Naga Srinivasa advised students to hone their skills instead of focusing only on marks.

He observed that any organisation without innovations cannot survive in this competitive world. He also gave a power point presentation on concepts of innovation and interacted with members of audience.
