US revokes Student Visa Rule after legal challenge by top Universities

July 15, 2020

New York: The United States Government rescinded its controversial decision to revoke foreign student visas whose courses move online due to Coronavirus, a Federal Judge said yesterday.

The Universities of Harvard and MIT, with the support of a number of other institutions, had taken legal action against the move that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on July 6.

“The Government has agreed to rescind” the decision as well as any implementation of the directive, Judge Allison Burroughs said in a brief hearing.

Harvard and MIT earlier had asked the Court to block the order by ICE that students must leave the country if their classes are only online or transfer to a school offering in-person tuition.

The measure was seen as a move by President Donald Trump administration to put pressure on educational institutions that are adopting a cautious approach to reopening amid COVID-19.

The Universities in their lawsuit had said that the order would harm students both personally and financially. There were more than one million international students in the US for the 2018-19 academic year, according to the Institute of International Education (IIE).

ONE COMMENT ON THIS POST To “US revokes Student Visa Rule after legal challenge by top Universities”

  1. Hello, hello! says:

India has hundreds of universities, and Modi claims , India has very skilled local population based on very good Indian education, and hence argues with foreign leaders to take these Indian graduates and post graduates as immigrants in thousands. But, what we see here is that Indian education is not good enough for these Indians who went to US to study! What made them to go overseas, if universities in India are of world class as Modi claims? Perhaps, these students: sons and daughters of the rich with unaccounted wealth are sent to launder that wealth in foreign shores. What better way to do it, than paying hefty fees, and living expenses. That is the truth.
