Two ‘Heroes on the Road’ from Mysuru, one from Bengaluru to receive Award in New Delhi today
Mysore/Mysuru: Three drivers of State Road Transport Undertakings (SRTUs) from Karnataka have won the ‘Heroes on the Road’ awards for accident-free driving.
Ishaq Shariff and Eajaz Ahmed Shariff, both from the KSRTC’s Mysuru division, have the distinction of not being involved in even a single accident in their 33-year service each.
Likewise, Lakshmana Reddy, a BMTC driver from the East Division, also maintained an impeccable accident-free record during 35 years of service.
Each of these drivers has won silver and gold medals for accident-free driving. Eajaz Ahmed Shariff is presently serving the Transport Corporation in Hunsur Depot and has won silver and gold medals from the KSRTC for accident-free driving.
Ishaq Shariff too is serving the KSRTC at Sathagalli depot of Mysuru and Lakshmana Reddy works at BMTC East Division-41. They will be presented with the awards at a ceremony in New Delhi today, Apr. 18.
The KSRTC has introduced a reward system for drivers, which includes gold medals and cash awards for bus drivers with an accident-free track record. More recently, a bus conductors’ category was added to the awards scheme to encourage the crew to ensure safe rides.
Before being inducted as drivers, they also undergo in-service training and take part in orientation sessions.
Most of the time, drivers are engaged in a competition. They want to overtake one another and thus end up driving rashly. The commuters have to bear the brunt. Often they are scared, as the rash driving may end up in accidents.
The award will certainly have a motivational impact on the drivers for improving their performance, officers said.
