Janaushadhi Kendras  – India’s healthcare revolution: Affordable dreams realised

May 31, 2025

The Karnataka Government has decided to shut down all Janaushadhi Kendras operating within Government Hospital premises, citing that State-run hospitals are expected to provide medicines free of cost to patients. However, the move has sparked strong criticism, with many calling it regressive and anti-poor. Widespread protests have erupted in opposition to the decision. In this context, we publish an article that highlights the role of Janaushadhi Kendras and their vital contribution to quality, affordable and accessible healthcare.

By Prof. R. Raveendra

Imagine a nation where quality healthcare is not a privilege but a fundamental right, accessible to every citizen, irrespective of economic status. This powerful vision drives the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), a transformative initiative that is reshaping India’s healthcare landscape by making essential medicines affordable and accessible to all.

A sprawling network of hope

Today, over 15,057 Janaushadhi Kendras span every district of India. These centres are more than just pharmacies — they are lifelines, providing affordable, quality medicines to communities that have long been underserved. This expansion marks a monumental stride towards ensuring healthcare is within reach for all.

Each Janaushadhi Kendra offers a comprehensive catalogue of 2,047 high-quality generic medicines and 300 surgical products. From routine health concerns to more complex medical conditions, the range of available products ensures holistic care for patients across the country.

Savings truly matter

What truly sets Janaushadhi medicines apart is their affordability. These medicines are available at discounts of up to 90 percent, compared to branded alternatives. This cost reduction is not just a financial relief. It is a game-changer for millions of families who can now access life-saving treatments without the burden of exorbitant costs.

Quality you can trust

In healthcare, quality is non-negotiable and PMBJP upholds highest standards. Every medicine sold through Janaushadhi Kendras is procured from World Health Organisation-Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO-GMP) certified manufacturers and tested rigorously in National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)-accredited labs. This ensures that every tablet, capsule and medical item meets the strictest quality benchmarks, reinforcing public trust in the programme.

Expanding access

With each Janaushadhi Kendra now serving an average of over 92,000 people, accessibility is no longer a distant dream — it is a growing reality. These centres are bridging the gap between healthcare and the people who need it most, eliminating barriers of distance, cost and availability.

A vision for 2027

Looking ahead, PMBJP has set an ambitious goal: to establish 25,000 Janaushadhi Kendras by 2027. This is not just a numerical target. It is a vision for a healthier, more equitable India, where every citizen can access the care they need, when they need it.

Suvidha: Menstrual hygiene

Understanding the importance of menstrual health, PMBJP also distributes ‘Suvidha’ sanitary napkins at just Re. 1 per pad. To date, over 47.87 crore pads have been distributed, promoting dignity, hygiene and empowerment for women across the country.

How to open a Janaushadhi Kendra?

The success of this movement depends on the participation of committed individuals and organisations. Any person, association, trust or society can apply to open a Janaushadhi Kendra anywhere in India.

The only requirement is the appointment of a qualified pharmacist, registered with the appropriate authorities and driven by a genuine desire to serve the nation by promoting health and well-being.
